Welcome to Harpenden Day Nursery St Albans, set in a converted Victorian house on Sun Lane in a quiet, leafy residential area of Harpenden. We are open Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 6:30pm.
Our Harpenden nursery is within walking distance of the town centre and close to local schools, with Harpenden station around ten minutes away and direct rail links to London and St Albans. Being part of the local community is important to us, and our team take time to get to know the children and families who come through our doors.
Children at Harpenden Day Nursery enjoy freshly prepared, nutritious meals each day, planned with guidance from a registered dietitian and adapted to individual dietary needs. Mealtimes are relaxed and sociable, giving children opportunities to explore different foods and enjoy eating together.
Strong relationships with families are an important part of nursery life. We keep communication open through daily conversations, regular family consultations, newsletters and stay-and-play sessions, giving families different ways to stay involved and talk with our team about their child.
The GrandirUK App helps families stay connected with their child’s nursery day, with updates, photos and learning moments alongside information about meals, routines and milestones.
Children can enjoy music and singing alongside our Make & Bake and Sow & Grow programmes, with hands-on experiences that encourage communication, creativity, teamwork and practical skills.
We also take regular walks and outings around Harpenden, giving children opportunities to explore their local surroundings, spend time in nature and discover more of the community beyond the nursery.
Harpenden Day Nursery is set in a converted Victorian house, with rooms spread across two floors. Our playrooms are calm, cosy and well resourced, with spaces thoughtfully arranged to support children at different ages and stages of their Early Years development.
Rooms are loosely structured around age ranges rather than being rigidly divided, giving children opportunities to explore in a safe, familiar environment. This flexibility allows our team to respond to each child’s stage of development and introduce new experiences when they are ready. Older children also have free-flow access between their playrooms and the garden.
Our lending library gives families the opportunity to borrow books and enjoy stories together at home, extending children’s enjoyment of books beyond their nursery day.
Outdoor space
Our large, natural garden plays a central role in life at Harpenden Day Nursery. Children can plant, grow and care for fruit, vegetables and other plants, giving them hands-on opportunities to discover where food comes from and observe how things change through the seasons.
Harvesting apples is a particular part of nursery life when autumn arrives. Alongside growing and gardening, children have space for digging, balancing, climbing and riding bikes, giving them plenty of opportunities to move, develop physical skills and enjoy being outdoors.
Continuity of care is an important part of life at Harpenden Day Nursery. Many of our team have been with us for several years, giving children the opportunity to build relationships with familiar people as they move through the nursery.
These consistent relationships help children become familiar with the people caring for them, while giving our team time to understand each child’s routines, interests and individual needs. This familiarity can provide reassurance as children settle in, move between rooms and encounter new experiences.
Our Early Years curriculum at Harpenden Day Nursery follows the EYFS and supports learning through play, curiosity and discovery. Our team build on children’s interests and use thoughtfully chosen resources and experiences to extend their learning, with opportunities to develop communication, physical skills, emotional wellbeing and growing independence.
As children move into preschool, learning continues to build on their interests while introducing experiences that support early skills, confidence and independence as they prepare for school.
We believe spending time outdoors gives children valuable opportunities to explore, discover and learn through first-hand experiences. At Harpenden Day Nursery, our large natural garden changes with the seasons and gives children plenty to investigate throughout the year.
From planting in spring to harvesting apples in autumn, children can get hands-on with the natural world, observing how things grow and exploring where food comes from. Following these changes season by season gives children time to ask questions, make discoveries and build on their curiosity.
For families with more than one child at Harpenden Day Nursery, our converted Victorian house on Sun Lane helps siblings stay connected while enjoying spaces and experiences suited to their own age and stage.
With rooms across two floors and a shared garden, there are opportunities for siblings to see each other during the nursery day. For families, having children at the same nursery also means one drop-off, one pick-up and one team to get to know.
Sibling places are subject to availability, but where we have space, our team will be happy to explore the options for each child.
Nursery Manager Kirstie leads the experienced team at Harpenden Day Nursery, including qualified Early Years professionals, Level 3 SENCos and team members trained in first aid.
Many of our team have been with the nursery for several years, giving children familiar faces and the opportunity to build consistent relationships as they grow and move through the nursery.
Every child also has a key person who takes time to get to know them, their routines, interests and individual needs, helping to provide consistent and personalised care throughout their time with us.
