Kiddi Caru Day Nursery Sowton has been recognised for strong standards across all areas in its latest Ofsted inspection, which took place on 27 May 2026.

Inspectors praised the nursery as an “extremely warm and welcoming setting” where children flourish. They highlighted the close and loving bonds children build with familiar staff, alongside the confidence, independence and resilience they develop from an early age. Children were described as highly motivated to learn, with staff creating an environment where they feel safe, secure and confident to explore.

The inspection recognised the strength of the nursery across every area assessed, including achievement, behaviour and attitudes, wellbeing, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance.

There is a real sense of curiosity and enjoyment throughout Kiddi Caru Day Nursery Sowton. Children are encouraged to explore, ask questions and get involved in experiences that help them understand themselves and the world around them.

From searching for items during outdoor scavenger hunts and creating art with coloured ice blocks to growing food, joining forest school sessions and meeting animals, children have plenty of opportunities to learn through doing.

Alongside these experiences, staff build strong relationships with children and know them exceptionally well. This helps create a nurturing environment where children feel secure, supported and ready to take on new challenges.

Learning through outdoor exploration

Kiddi Caru Sowton’s large outdoor environment gives children plenty of space to be active, curious and adventurous. Dedicated obstacle areas and a wide range of garden activities support children to develop their physical skills while building confidence and resilience through play.

Inspectors highlighted the abundance of garden play available to children and noted how children develop healthy lifestyles through regular physical activity. Growing projects and cooking experiences also help children learn about healthy food and develop an understanding of where food comes from.

The nursery’s approach to outdoor learning goes beyond physical development. Children have opportunities to explore natural life through experiences such as forest school sessions and observing ducklings hatch and grow, helping them develop their understanding of the natural world.

Discovering the world around them

Children at the nursery benefit from a broad and exciting curriculum designed around their individual needs and interests. Staff skilfully build learning into everyday experiences, supporting children to develop their communication, literacy, mathematical and physical skills.

Real-life experiences help make this learning meaningful. Children take part in Eco-Schools activities, meet members of the local community and enjoy Spanish sessions, giving them opportunities to discover different people, cultures and ways of life.

Animal experiences also provide memorable opportunities for children to learn about living things. Meeting animals, including tortoises, and observing their development encourages children to ask questions, investigate and build their understanding of the world around them.

Building confidence, communication and independence

A strong focus on communication and language runs throughout the nursery. Babies are encouraged to communicate through gestures, signing, shared books and conversations, while toddlers develop their vocabulary through activities such as ‘songs bag’ sessions. Older children are introduced to increasingly complex vocabulary and are encouraged to express themselves confidently.

Inspectors also highlighted children’s positive attitudes towards learning and their resilience when faced with challenges. Staff provide nurturing support while giving children the opportunity to persevere, helping them develop confidence in their own abilities.

Independence is encouraged from an early age. Children become familiar with consistent routines and are given opportunities to take responsibility within the nursery. Inspectors noted how older children take on roles such as ‘tidying helper’, proudly wearing medals when they complete their tasks and developing a strong sense of shared responsibility.

An inclusive environment where every child can thrive

Inclusion was recognised as another strong area of provision. Leaders and staff know children exceptionally well and work quickly to identify and address barriers to learning and participation.

Thoughtful adaptations help ensure every child can be involved and make progress. These include picture prompts, home languages, conversation cubes, word games and resources designed to support emotional regulation.

Staff also work closely with families and external professionals to understand each child’s individual needs and provide tailored support. Inspectors recognised the nursery’s commitment to ensuring that children are included, supported and able to thrive.

The latest Ofsted inspection highlighted the many ways the setting supports children to flourish, with strong standards recognised across all areas of the provision.

At the heart of this is a team that knows its children exceptionally well and creates a warm, inclusive environment where children feel safe to explore, learn and grow. Whether they are tackling an outdoor challenge, discovering a new word, caring for plants or taking part in an exciting new experience, children are encouraged to develop the confidence, resilience and independence they need for the future.
