Kiddi Caru Downend Road celebrates curious, confident children following positive Ofsted outcome

Kiddi Caru Downend Road is celebrating a positive Ofsted inspection which took place on 12 August 2026, recognising the nursery’s calm and caring environment, strong relationships and engaging approach to children’s learning and development.

The inspection highlighted a setting where children feel safe, secure and valued, while being encouraged to become increasingly independent and curious about the world around them. Safeguarding standards were met, with inspectors recognising an open culture where safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

The framework category ‘Behaviour, attitudes and establishing routines’ was judged to be a ‘Strong standard’, with inspectors praising staff for their extremely high expectations and a calm, consistent approach to supporting children’s behaviour.

From learning to use ‘kind hands’ and take turns, to caring for books and resources, children are supported to develop respect for others and their environment. Calm transitions between play spaces also help children feel settled and emotionally secure throughout the day.

Helping children feel safe, secure and ready to explore

Children’s welfare and wellbeing was also judged to be a ‘Strong standard’, with inspectors highlighting the warm and affectionate relationships children build with their staff.

The nursery’s highly effective key-person system helps children, particularly babies and younger children, feel safe and supported. Inspectors observed “delightful interactions” during everyday care routines, with staff responding sensitively to children’s individual needs while encouraging independence and building self-esteem. This strong sense of security gives children the confidence to try new things.

Independence is also encouraged throughout the nursery, including at mealtimes, where toddlers serve themselves, pour their own drinks and feed themselves confidently. These everyday experiences give children opportunities to develop practical skills while learning about healthy lifestyles and different food preferences.

From hot air balloons to ‘World Elephant Day’

Curiosity is at the heart of children’s experiences at Kiddi Caru Downend Road, with staff building learning around their interests and encouraging them to explore, question and share their ideas.

One memorable example observed by inspectors was children’s fascination with hot-air balloons. After talking about balloons, they had seen in their community and sharing their own ideas, children predicted how their creations might fly before testing the wind direction as they launched them from the low-level bridge.

The nursery also offers a wide range of sensory, creative and physical experiences. During World Elephant Day, children stomped on bubble wrap to explore its texture, while creative activities saw them confidently spray paint and experiment with creating new colours.

Books are another important part of children’s experiences. Babies carefully choose and explore their favourite books, while preschool children listen closely to familiar stories such as Room on the Broom, anticipating what will happen next and recalling details from the story.

Communication and language is a key focus within the curriculum, with activities such as ‘sing-and-sign’ supporting children’s listening and attention skills. Staff respond warmly to children’s vocalisations and actions, helping them develop confidence in expressing themselves.

Supporting every child to thrive

Kiddi Caru Downend Road is committed to creating an inclusive environment where every child feels supported, can participate fully, and is encouraged to make progress from their individual starting point. Inspectors found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), as well as those with emerging needs, benefit from a well-structured environment that is adapted to their individual requirements.

Staff use personalised approaches and focused interactions to help children engage with learning, while leaders work closely with families to understand each child’s needs and put effective support in place. At Kiddi Caru Downend Road, every child is valued, supported and given the opportunity to thrive.

The nursery also uses additional funding thoughtfully to provide resources such as spinning chairs and weighted blankets, carefully monitoring their impact on children’s emotional security.

A team committed to making a difference

Leadership and governance were judged to be at the ‘Expected standard’, with inspectors recognising the team’s focus on embedding the curriculum and creating a calm and inviting environment where children feel settled and valued.

Staff feel supported in their roles, with regular observations, discussions and supervision helping to identify relevant training and development opportunities. Families also praised the nursery’s communication and leadership, saying they feel listened to and that their feedback is acted upon.

Working closely with families, listening to their feedback and providing support where possible is an important part of the approach across all Grandir UK nurseries.
