Kiddi Caru Day Nursery taking steps to be an eco nursery in Leighton Buzzard!

The team and children at Kiddi Caru Day Nursery, Leighton Buzzard are waving green flags this week in triumph of achieving their Eco-Schools Green Flag award with Merit, taking steps towards being an eco nursery in Leighton Buzzard.

At Grandir UK, we encourage all our nurseries to champion recycling and sustainability, look after the world around them, and include environmental education within their nursery setting, to help children make informed choices as they develop.

What is this Award?

Eco-Schools is an organisation that engage young pupils, in both nurseries and schools, to take a stand against climate change, and help them access and implement big and small sustainability practices to better nature and the environment no matter where they are.

The programme offers a straightforward, seven-step framework enabling young people to make a tangible impact in their school, local community, and beyond.

Since 1994, millions of young pupils in all sorts of school settings have followed the Eco-Schools Seven Steps framework and earning the esteemed Eco-Schools Green Flag for their efforts.

To obtain this award, schools and nurseries need to align their activities with three or more of the Ten Eco-Schools Topics listed on their website. These topics cover areas such as recycling, energy sustainability, biodiversity development, healthy living as so much more!

The topics break down major environmental issues into manageable, focused themes, and encourages young pupils to share the importance of looking after the world we live in and how to develop sustainable living changes in their school and daily lives.

What did Kiddi Caru Leighton Buzzard do?

The children and team Kiddi Caru Day Nursery in Leighton Buzzard were honoured to start earning this award and here’s what the did on a daily basis to get it:

The Eco & Butterfly Committee

As a part of the Green Flag Award, every nursery and school are required to create an Eco Committee to discuss the sustainability actions and environmental issues they would like to tackle in their nursery.

Kiddi Caru Leighton Buzzard choose Save the Trees, Help the Bees and Clean the Seas as their three top three topics to focus on. The many long term employees and children were praised by the Eco-Schools organisation for their efforts:

“The projects developed for your three topics are a great variety of activities that will make an immediate difference”

The nursery not only created an Eco-Committee but a Butterfly Committee too!

The children discussed the best ways to get more butterflies within their nursey garden, how important these creatures are for the environment, and put together an action plan to implement in their nursery.

The children in the Eco-Committee have used a wide variety of methods to inform their nursery community about the work they were doing, such as sending updates on the Famly app, which their parents are able to access.

The Eco-schools organisation were impressed by the children’s commitment to and understanding of these environmental issues, how they took so much pride in their achievements, and how they are working hard to involve and educate all around them!

Growing in the Garden

Kiddi Caru in Leighton Buzzard used their nursery garden to grow their own herbs, showing clearly that the staff team are willing to go above and beyond to support children making eco-friendly changes across all aspects of their nursery setting, and support children’s learning.

Children enjoy planting vegetables and produce in their natural garden area during their outdoor play, embracing green initiatives while also improving their physical skills for school and beyond!

Celebrating the Environment

The nursery and preschool installed an Eco-Board in their nursery to demonstrate their commitment to the programme and highlight the importance of all their hard work!

The nursery team have also implemented environmental education across the whole setting, helped children develop an Eco-Code for everyone to follow, and have increased the use of natural resources within their nursery.

The children have also been celebrating Bee Day, where they made wild flower bombs to plant in either the nursery garden or at home.

All of these efforts have been great to make eco-education fun and engaging for the whole nursery, while helping each and every child’s social and physical development ready for school!

Taking care of the environment and engaging in sustainability is as equally important to us as our fully inclusive setting and convenient service we offer at Grandir UK!

That’s why one of our educational programmes in our Foundations to the Future is ‘Environmental Aware & Responsible’ as we want to engage the younger generation of children to make informed decisions to make this world a more environmentally friendly and overall better place!

Our Sow & Grow module truly embraces these principles and encourages children to get outside in the fresh air, learning the skills to grow all kinds of plants and produce, and experience the awe wonder in the world.

The physical development which can be gained from our ‘Sow & Grow’ programme can support children transition to school and beyond! It has also shown to support a child’s social interaction with peers and other young people.
