Kiddi Caru Day Nursery & Pre-school in Wellingborough are celebrating their Eco-School Green Flag achievement, taking their first steps to being an Eco-Schools nursery in Wellingborough.
Getting this achievement is a massive accomplishment which showcases their dedication to environmental education and sustainable practices, illustrating a true unique offering for their offering.
They have made massive progress by engaging their local community, children and families to spread the importance of looking after the environment, not only at their site but within their local area as well.
The Eco-Schools organisation is an international programme that engages schools, nurseries, colleges and other educational settings to include environmental teaching as a part of their learning opportunities offered within their setting.
The Green Flag Award is the highest achievement within this programme, which recognises students that have taken action to tackle different environmental issues within their setting such as climate change and biodiversity.
To achieve this award, schools must complete a seven-step framework that includes forming an Eco-Committee, conducting an Environmental Review, developing an Action Plan, and monitoring and evaluating progress.
The aim is to engage young students in meaningful, hands-on activities that promote sustainability.
Kiddi Caru in Wellingborough have dedicated an abundance of time and energy into making their nursery more eco friendly.
The childcare provider began by creating their eco-committee which they called their ‘Eco-Club’, which consisted of a few member of staff from the nursery team and, of course, the nursery children. Together they put together an action plan to cover three topics to focus on: Healthy Living, Biodiversity, and Water.
The eco-club put in efforts to these areas which were nothing short of exemplary according to the Eco-Schools team.
The eco-committee evaluated that they had already been making steps to spread awareness of a healthy lifestyle within their nursery and decided to explore this point further.
The nursery developed many initiatives to promote physical and mental wellbeing among the children and parents. This included teaching the children strategies and exercises to improve their mental health, laying the foundation for lifelong healthy habits.
The nursery tried new things to help achieve their Green Flag Award which included doing more biodiversity projects. The children established a new garden within a sunny space in the nursery’s outdoor area. This included making seed bombs and planting them in the garden to create a wild flower area, welcoming and providing food for bees and other wildlife in their setting.
They also created bird-feeders and bug houses, to make their space more biodiverse for a range of different species. The creation of ten bird feeders was a standout project for the Eco-Schools team, that really showcased the nursery’s passion for nature among its young learners.
The nursery also include water conservation as a part of the children’s learning journey. The eco-committee put together fun activities to teach each and every child the importance of water conservation, making sure that everyone knew the benefit this had on the environment.
The Eco-School team commented on how accessible the nursery’s action plan was, reflecting a high level of understanding and meaningfully embracing the Eco-Schools ethos. Goals were clearly set, meticulously organised, and diligently noted as they were achieved, demonstrating a strong commitment to continuous improvement and community involvement.
A critical aspect of Kiddi Caru in Wellingborough’s Green Flag award success was that they managed to engage their entire local community. Regular updates via the nursery’s newsfeed kept parents informed about the Eco-Schools projects and invited them to contribute to their events, such as by providing milk bottles for various activities. Their beautiful eco-board located in the nursery corridor displayed all of the nursery’s actions they carried out.
One particularly activity which was particularly beloved by the Eco-Schools team, was the nursery’s support for the local charity, Northants Little Wombles. This partnership not only amplified the nursery’s impact on the community but also taught the children the importance of helping local residents and working together for a common cause.
“I’m so proud of our eco-group who helped us get our Eco-School Green Flag Award. This journey has been a rewarding experience for both my staff members and our students.”
“I’ve been inspired by the children in our care, who have not only been able to develop their creativity and skills, but have also grown more independent during this experience. They have a deep respect for the environment and understand the importance of sustainability. This award is a testament to the hard work and development they have all put into this award.”
