International Women’s Day 2026: Give support, gain equality – Why investing in women strengthens the early years workforce

Women are continuously achieving incredible things, and International Women’s Day 2026, taking place on March 8, is the perfect opportunity to shine a light and celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of inspiring women across the world.

At Grandir UK, we continuously champion women through campaigns like GrandWomen, and we’re always looking for ways to further support them, from the parents and carers who trust us with their children’s early years education to our nursery practitioners who make a difference to children’s lives every day. We are committed to creating an environment where everyone thrives!

Here’s more on what the global movement represents and how businesses like Grandir UK can play a meaningful role in supporting this.

What’s the International Women’s Day 2026 theme?

This year’s International Women’s Day campaign theme is #GiveToGain. This focuses on actively encouraging individuals, organisations, government bodies and leaders to recognise the power of giving, whether that is resources, time, knowledge, mentorship or education, in helping to strengthen gender equality and move closer towards achieving gender equality worldwide.

In an interconnected world where many women continue to face barriers in their personal lives and careers, providing support, training, and equal opportunities is essential to ensuring long-term progress towards equal rights.

Give flexibility, gain loyalty

Balancing career aspirations with personal responsibilities such as caring for family, engaging in further study or prioritising well-being is not always straightforward. Flexibility in the workplace is becoming increasingly important, particularly in sectors like early years education, where many professionals juggle multiple commitments.

At Grandir UK, we believe flexibility should enable people to continue building meaningful careers at every stage of life. This could be part-time roles, opportunities to train while working or supportive leadership that recognises that life outside of work matters too.

When workplace settings invest in flexible working and professional development, they not only help individuals grow in confidence and capability, but they also strengthen the workforce as a whole. Retention improves, experience is preserved and children benefit from stable, consistent relationships during the most formative years of their development.

Supporting flexibility is an important part of our approach at Grandir UK with our GrandFlex initiative, which helps provide flexible early years job opportunities that support colleagues in balancing their personal commitments while continuing to build meaningful careers.

Give opportunities, gain equality

Creating opportunities for growth and development helps support equality in the workplace and beyond. At Grandir UK, we believe access to comprehensive training, career development and meaningful progression pathways helps people build confidence and reach their full potential. The early years education sector plays an important role in shaping future generations. Through ongoing professional development and supportive teams, practitioners can grow in confidence and skill. This strengthens a diverse and dedicated workforce that supports children, families and communities every day.

Give belonging, gain confidence

A fulfilling career starts with feeling valued and included. When a culture of belonging runs throughout a business, people are more likely to feel confident, supported and empowered in the work they do every day. The early years education sector thrives on diverse voices and perspectives. Creating nurturing environments where everyone feels they truly belong encourages more people to step forward into leadership, share their ideas and contribute to decision making. In turn, this strengthens the sector and ensures that children are surrounded by positive role models who reflect the communities they grow up in.

In practice, this might look like a practitioner returning to work after time away and being supported to take on new responsibilities, or a colleague completing a qualification later in life with encouragement from their team. These everyday acts of support may seem small, but together they build confidence, capability and long-term progress.

When we invest in women’s growth and well-being, we enhance the quality of early years education we provide. Confident, supported practitioners create engaging learning environments, build strong attachments and help lay the foundations for children’s future success.

Looking ahead

International Women’s Day is a global opportunity to celebrate women, highlight their achievements and continue raising awareness around the importance of equality. But meaningful change happens in the everyday actions that follow.

This International Women’s Day 2026, we are reminded that by giving support, encouragement and opportunity, we gain stronger teams, more confident leaders and brighter futures for the children and families we serve.
