Behind the scenes: A typical nursery day at Grandir UK

When parents start to explore childcare options, many wonder what a typical nursery day actually looks like. At Grandir UK, each nursery day is thoughtfully designed to nurture the learning, development and happiness of every child, from our smallest babies in the baby room to confident pre-schoolers preparing for school.

We spoke to Helen, Nursery Manager of Winchmore Hill Day Nursery and Preschool – recently rated Outstanding by Ofsted– to take you behind the scenes and show how a day at nursery truly unfolds.

A warm welcome and calm start to the day

The nursery day begins with warmth, familiarity and joy. Children are greeted by their key person, an important figure who knows them well, responds to their emotional needs, and helps them settle in their own way.

Sometimes it’s a cuddle, a wave, or a few minutes of conversation. We meet children where they’re at, depending on their needs that day. This calm and purposeful start sets the tone for a day filled with meaningful, engaging learning,” says Helen. This personal approach to arrival eases anxieties and sets a positive tone for the daily routine.

Rooms are thoughtfully prepared each morning with open-ended resources, activities and provocations based on the children’s current interests. Whether it’s loose parts play, mark-making, sensory stations, or construction play areas, children are encouraged to explore at their own pace.

Learning through child-led free play & adult-guided activities

At Winchmore Hill and across all Grandir UK nurseries, children are given endless enriching opportunities to discover, explore, create, and learn through inspiring and engaging experiences. Activities are a balance of child-led free play and intentional, adult-guided experiences, all rooted in a child-centred approach and supported by our bespoke ’ME Model’, which nurtures personal, social, and cognitive development.

Environments for both indoor and outdoor play are designed to be flexible, inspiring and responsive – offering a plethora of opportunities to encourage children to think, create and collaborate. For example, children frequently immerse themselves in construction play, using a wide range of materials to build, design and engineer. These hands-on experiences support problem-solving skills, mathematical thinking, and teamwork – all while giving them the freedom to explore big ideas with little hands.

The children also benefit from educational programmes like Make & Bake, Move & Grove and Sow & Grow. These experiences support fine and gross motor skills development, early maths, science understanding and more!

Purposeful routines and meaningful rituals from arrival to home time

At Winchmore Hill, gentle routines and meaningful rituals are woven into each day to create a nurturing rhythm that fosters calmness, connection and a strong sense of belonging.

Here’s what a nursery daily schedule might look like:

  • 7:30–9:00 am – Arrival & settling in

Children are welcomed by familiar adults and start the day with child-led play and comfort from their key person.

  • 9:00–9:30 am – Morning circle time

Songs, stories, and sharing set the tone for an inclusive, connected morning.

  • 9:30–11:30 am – Free-flow play indoors and outdoors

Children explore indoor and outdoor play spaces, including the Visual and Performance Art Studios for creativity and self-expression. These experiences are designed to support every child’s learning, confidence, and curiosity.

  • 10:00–11:00 am – Rolling snack time

Children choose when to eat and help themselves to their own tea, building independence, self-regulation and healthy eating habits.

  • 11:30am–12:00 pm – Small group learning or movement sessions

This could include focused story time, yoga, or a Move & Groove experience – all supporting emotional wellbeing and enriching your child’s learning journey.

  • 12:00–12:30 pm – Lunch time

Children enjoy nutritious, freshly prepared meals that support their physical development and growing independence.

  • 12:30–2:00 pm – Rest & quiet time

Babies nap in calm, comfortable spaces, while older children enjoy quiet moments in cosy corners or our Sensory Room to reflect and recharge.

  • 2:00–3:30 pm – Afternoon activities

Children engage in creative projects, outdoor play, or local outings. Programmes like Make & Bake or Sow & Grow continue to support holistic development.

  • 3:30–4:00 pm – Afternoon snack

A chance to refuel and chat with peers as the day gently winds down.

  • 4:00–6:00 pm – Wind-down & pick-up

Children enjoy calm, engaging play, stories or one-on-one time with their key person in preparation for home time.

This consistent and nurturing nursery schedule helps children feel secure, confident and ready to enjoy each day to the fullest.

Supporting all ages and stages

Children and their well-being are truly at the heart of everything we do, and that includes how we support learning and development across all age groups. We understand that every child develops at their own pace, which is why our approach is never one-size-fits-all.

Nursery Manager Helen, touching on Winchmore Hill’s approach, expressed: “Although our nursery is organised into age-based rooms, transitions between groups are guided by each child’s individual developmental stage, not simply their date of birth. This flexible approach allows us to meet children where they are, whether they need additional support or are already exceeding age-related expectations.

We also believe strongly in the power of positive role modelling, and where appropriate, we offer opportunities for younger children to spend time with older peers. These moments promote communication, confidence, social skills, and inspire progress through meaningful interactions with children they look up to. These mixed-age moments build confidence, connection, and motivation.”

A passionate nursery team makes all the difference

It’s the passionate and dedicated people behind our nurseries that truly bring each setting to life. Their commitment, care and expertise create the nurturing environments where children can flourish.

Reflecting on her incredible team at Winchmore Hill, Helen shared, “Our team members are the heart and soul of this nursery. They’re more than just staff, they are passionate, dedicated professionals who genuinely care about every child’s journey and take pride in supporting their growth each day.
