Wandsworth Day Nursery achieves Strong standard across all Ofsted areas

From the excitement of making colourful artwork to the pride of putting on their own shoes, everyday moments at Wandsworth Day Nursery help children discover their full potential and capabilities. Now, the nursery is celebrating an excellent Ofsted outcome, with all six areas of education and care judged to be at a ‘Strong standard’ following its inspection on 17 September 2026. Safeguarding standards were also met.

This is a fantastic achievement for the nursery, recognising the team’s dedication to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment where children feel secure, develop confidence and make meaningful progress.

Building confidence from the very beginning

A happy nursery day starts with feeling safe and knowing there are familiar faces ready to welcome you. Inspectors noted that children arrive enthusiastically, greet staff warmly and settle quickly into their surroundings.

These trusting relationships give children the confidence to explore new experiences at their own pace. Staff understand their individual needs and offer gentle encouragement, helping each child feel a sense of belonging.

Independence grows through everyday achievements. Inspectors highlighted how toddlers practise putting on their own shoes and socks, learning to persevere and take pride in managing tasks for themselves.

Little discoveries, big learning moments

Curiosity is encouraged throughout the nursery, with children given opportunities to get hands-on, ask questions and discover how things work.

Outdoors, children grow herbs and turn food scraps into compost, exploring the natural world while learning about caring for their environment. Inside, creative activities invite them to experiment with colour and movement. In one example highlighted by inspectors, children roll toy cars through paint and down ramps onto paper, creating patterns as they play.

Even making a smoothie becomes a chance to learn. Children count and sort fruit, compare sizes and work out which quantities are bigger or smaller. These playful experiences help bring early mathematical ideas to life.

Finding their voices and friendships

Stories, songs and conversations give children plenty of opportunities to express themselves and connect with others. Inspectors praised the nursery’s language-rich environment, where staff introduce new vocabulary and encourage children to share their thoughts, ideas and experiences.

During singing sessions, younger children bounce to the beat and wave colourful scarves, exploring rhythm and movement while developing early communication skills.

As children play alongside their friends, they also learn to share, show kindness and consider other people. These everyday interactions help build the social skills and confidence that will support them as they move towards their next stage of learning.

Helping every child flourish

Every child deserves to feel included and supported. Inspectors recognised how staff adapt activities and the nursery environment to help children participate and access resources independently.

Visual timetables and picture prompts help children understand what comes next, while close partnerships with families and other professionals ensure individual needs are identified and supported. This includes children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), helping everyone take part in nursery life and make progress.

Healthy habits are part of the journey too. Children help choose the weekly menu and cook alongside the nursery chef, exploring fresh ingredients and learning about balanced eating through enjoyable, practical experiences.

A team making a lasting difference

Behind these everyday discoveries is a dedicated team committed to giving children the best possible start. Ofsted recognised how leaders value staff, encourage professional development and create opportunities to reflect on practice.

The team also continues to develop the nursery environment, including plans for garden spaces that encourage exploration and support physical development.

Melissa Hawthorne, Nursery Manager at Wandsworth Day Nursery, said:

“We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised the strengths of our nursery across every area of the report card.
